A Walk Through the City with Common

Speaking of visual documentation of urban street life, Common's "The People" is basically a video essay on the American city.

  1. That's New York. There are a couple of very random shots of Chicago landmarks (Marina City, Merch Mart, the Water Tower) but the city in 99% of that video is definitely the Apple.

  2. Thanks Brendan! That was what Katia had at first, but after seeing those Chicago landmarks I thought it must have been filmed in Chicago. My fault!!!

  3. The scenes could be from any major American city...

  4. I just found a Google street view of the place in Brooklyn where a lot of those scenes are set. Does anyone know which bridge he's standing under, or the open field by the water in the beginning?

  5. So, he was standing under the Manhattan Bridge. I can't believe I didn't notice that. And it looks like the first background is South Street Seaport, so maybe he was next to the Brooklyn Bridge in that scene, with the camera facing across the river? Anyway, I don't know why I keep trying to figure this out, there are probably more important things in life. ;)
