polis: a collective blog about cities worldwide

Featured Artist: El Anatsui

by Peter Sigrist

Vivien's Trashy Art series has inspired me to bring back the "featured artist" posts started several months ago. I just saw an ad for a showing of Ghanaian artist El Anatsui's work at the Jack Shainman Gallery. The connection to trash is in the materials: discarded bottle tops, milk tins, old flour graters, labels from liquor bottles, and other findings from what Anatsui describes as the "piles of detritus from consumption" growing throughout West Africa. The thought of garbage in cities being turned into this kind of art leaves me full of hope.
